June - August 2010
Winter is certainly upon us. We have already had workdays disrupted through rain, but we shouldn't complain. Hopefully we continue to receive good rains through into spring which would make it a great season. Lawns have slowed down, warm season grasses have become dormant.
During Winter the majority of our work is work around the garden including rose pruning, landscaping, tree and hedge pruning, fire prevention clean ups including burn offs. We can even organise the permit through your local council and advise the CFA.
Spend $220 inc GST or more on any service during Winter, mention this newsletter and receive a double Village Cinema ticket.
Remember Winter is the time to buy bare rooted trees and roses. Bare rooted is an extremely economical way to buy plants, much cheaper than buying in pots. It is also the time to prune fruit trees and roses. If you are unable to do them yourself we are able expertly do them for you.
During the Winter months we like to take advantage of the slower season, Glen will be on holidays during the school holidays and Phil will be heading to Tasmania for two weeks later in July.
May 2010
We have continued to receive plenty of rain this Autumn. Temperatures continued to stay above average through April. Average rainfall for Melbourne during April is 69mm. Some southern suburbs and the Mornington Peninsula received more than 100mm for the month.
James our apprentice has succesfully completed his three month probation period so we would like to welcome him to our team.
June 5th is World Environment Day and 2010 is International Year of Biodiversity. This is a good time to consider how our homes and gardens impact on our environment.
Some things that you can do in the garden:
It's time to mulch- Mulch garden beds or top up with fresh mulch. This will help to reduce evaporation and soil erosion.
- Use wetting agents in the soil so when it rains will not run off as much and more water will reach the root zone which will reduce the amount of water that your garden will use.
- Mulching your lawn returns nutrients back into the soil which fertilizes the lawn and reduces evaporation.
Some ideas for your home or office:
- Install water efficient shower heads, flow restrictors and dual flush toilets.
- Change your lightglobes to low wattage compact fluorescent globes.
- There is now also a low wattage, low voltage mini down-light globe available in Australia. Visit www.greenwe.com.au
April 2010
Autumn is looking good this year. Everywhere around Melbourne is looking green and lush which is thanks to plenty of rain during March and above average temperatures. Melbourne received 79mm of rain last month and the average rainfall for March is 50.4mm.

Back to Stage 3 restrictions!
Melbourne has now moved back up to Stage 3 water restrictions which means you can water your garden every second day between 6-8am. Odd number houses can water on odd dates and even on even dates.
Now is a great time to start thinking about planting new plants to replace ones lost over the Summer months or if you were putting off your landscaping project due to not being able to water your new garden.
The CFA has also lifted burn off bans early this year. As from 22 March 2010 residents are able to do fuel reduction burn offs. Check with your local council to see if you need a permit.
At AC Maintenance we can help you with a variety of jobs in your garden including landscaping, planting and fire fuel reduction programmes.
March 2010
Here we are in Autumn, I think everyone is relieved that Summer was much more tolerable than last year. Thank goodness the fire season was very kind to us. Now is a good time to start thinking about getting your property ready for next Summer.

We can control your weeds
Glen and Phil completed their Chemicals Certificate last month. This means that we will be able to access any chemicals needed to control weeds, fungi and pests in your lawn and garden.
Glen and his family will be taking a well earned weeks holiday later this month.
James our apprentice has started school. He will be attending Cranbourne Chisholm on Tuesdays.

Seasonal Tips
Garden Tips For September Many winter and spring flowering shrubs can be pruned now. Camellias may need light pruning to maintain shape. Tassel bush (Garrya elliptica), Japanese flowering quince (Chanomeles japonica), Spiraeas and dwarf almonds.(Prunus glandulosa) can all be pruned as they finish flowering. Feed your roses as they begin to shoot. French and Runner beans can be planted in soil that has been previously fertilised with suitable organic compost together with a fertiliser of superphosphate and sulphate of ammonia. For summer colour, plant out your impatiens and petunias this month. Although your bulbs have finished flowering, keep feeding and watering them until the leaves die right down. This way they will be in great condition to flower again next year Once your azaleas have finished flowering, give them a feed with Camellia and Azalea food |
